Report Back  May-June 2018

It's always busy in the constituency office and last month was no exception. We replied to over 1100 emails and resolved 96 cases. The caseload is varied but the most frequent issues raised with me are: disability benefits, housing, immigration and crime.

We're similarly busy out of the constituency office - there's always some issue to take up on behalf of local people. I have been conducting a survey in South Woodgate on flooding which continues to be a problem for residents and I will be holding a meeting with the Environment Agency in the near future.

I am continuing to put pressure on the local police after my crime and policing survey in Harborne showed that drug crime is becoming a real worry for many people. Rest assured I will keep on arguing the case for more resources until we get what we need.

You can read about more of my work over the last month below. As always please let me know what you think.

 Best wishes

BELGRAVE MIDDLEWAY

Image

The campaign for infrastructural change around Belgrave Middleway following  last December's awful accident is on-going. It's clear to me, the police, the fire service and many residents that average speed monitoring and number plate recognition are vital if we want to slow traffic down at this treacherous spot.

NHS PRIVATISATION

NHS outsourcing and privatisation debate:

I recently spoke against the Govt privatisation agenda of our NHS.

The issue of privatisation within the NHS is both an important and an emotive one. I believe in a publicly owned NHS, free at the point of delivery, but the creeping privatisation of services poses a very real threat to that most essential of principles.

FIGHTING ECONOMIC INEQUALITY

I asked the chancellor when he will commit to putting in place the investment needed to end regional imbalances that have seen the North of England set to receive just one fifth of the transport investment per capita of London?

WE NEED A CUSTOM'S UNION

I spoke in support of Labour's motion asking Government to release to Parliament all papers prepared for the Brexit sub-committee on the proposed customs partnership and maximum facilitation model, including any economic analysis.  A customs union is integral for the manufacturing industry in the West Midlands. The automotive industry employs over 50,000 people across the region. READ MORE

During DFID questions I asked the Minister the following : In the light of the DRC Government’s decision to boycott the April humanitarian pledging conference in Geneva and to deny the scale of the displacement crisis in the country, what representations has the Secretary of State made, now that Ebola poses a very real additional threat, to ensure that the same does not happen again, and that the DRC Government accept urgent assistance to prevent an international health emergency.

I recently spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on the persecution of Christians abroad. We need to begin to build a movement in defence of the right to choose or change one’s religion or belief and make strides towards a more stable world.
